ICO publishes detailed guidance on the right of access

The ICO has published detailed guidance on the right of access to ensure organisations know how to deal with a subject access request (SAR) effectively and efficiently. ICO point out that more and more people are waking up to the power of their personal data, and are exercising their rights. That’s why it is important for organisations to know how to deal with a SAR effectively and efficiently. The ICO also emphasise that the right of access is a cornerstone of data protection law and good SAR compliance instils trust and confidence. That’s why it’s essential that organisations get this right, because people’s trust in how organisations use their personal data plays a role in their overall confidence and support for the was data is gathered, stored and used. The Guidance is aimed at data protection officers (DPOs) and those with specific data protection responsibilities in larger organisations and advises users to read the ‘in brief’ page on the right of access in the Guide to Data Protection, first as it introduces this topic and sets out the key points you need to know, along with practical checklists to help organisations comply.
