New figures published by the Health and Safety Executive show workplace illness and injury rates in 2013/14. The key findings are as follows:
- 1.2 million people were suffering from an illness (long-standing as well as new cases) they believed was caused or made worse by their current or past work.
- 133 workers were killed at work, a rate of 0.44 fatalities per 100 000 workers.
- 629, 000 injuries occurred at work according to the Labour Force Survey.
- 23.5 million days were lost due to work-related ill health and 4.7 million days were lost due to workplace injury, making a total of 28.2 million days in all.
As concerning as these figures are, the HSE highlight that overall, UK performance is better than many other European countries in the key outcome areas, i.e. injuries, fatalities and levels of self-reported work-related ill health.
