£4,582,124 compensation awarded in discriminaton cases in 2007

According to the Equal Opportunities Review (EOR) annual survey of discrimination cases in 2007, the total amount of compensation awarded, including interest, was £4,582,124 and the average award of compensation rose by £808 to £14,068. The average median award was £7,520.

The EOR annual survey of compensation for unlawful discrimination (issues 179 and 180) covers 316 cases where compensation was awarded in England, Wales and Scotland in 2007. The total amount awarded, including interest, was £4,582,124. This is almost £300,000 more than in 2006. The average award was £14,068 and the median £7,520. The highest award was for £187,614 in a disability discrimination case. A summary of the findings is as follows:

The overall amount awarded for injury to feelings in 2007 was £1,732,515, some £180,000 more than the previous year. The average has increased, £6,016 in 2007 compared with £5,660 in 2006, but the median has once again decreased, to £4,500.
